By Jack Tiernan: Sunny Edwards claims a fight between him and WBC flyweight champion Julio Cesar Martinez is in the works almost done. Martinez, 26, is looking nearly unbeatable right now, and he would have a huge advantage in punching power over the light-hitting Sunny if this match gets made.
It hasn’t been confirmed by his promoters, and it looks like a REALLY bad idea for the IBF 112-lb champion Sunny (17-0, 4 KOs).
Sunny looking for revenge
Fans believe that Edwards, 26, wants to avenge the loss of his brother Charlie Edwards, the former WBC flyweight champion that Martinez (18-1, 14 KOs0 destroyed in three rounds in August 2019.
The fight results were later changed to a no-contest due to the finishing coup de grace shot that Martinez hit Edwards with to the body while he was on the canvas.
But if you look at the fight, Edwards was already done for the night after being dropped.
Having the fight results changed to a no-contest didn’t change what went down in that fight. Martinez overpowered Charlie, obliterating him like he wasn’t even in there.
Unfortunately, Sunny is the same type of light hitter as his brother Charlie, which is why it would be a good idea for his promoters
Martinez says he wants to unify the 112-lb division, so it makes sense for him to fight Sunny for his IBF strap, and then these champions:
- Artem Dalakian – WBA
- Junto Nakatani – WBO
Most boxing fans would agree that Nakatani and Dalakian are far more interesting fights for Martinez than Edwards, but they lack the revenge storyline. With Sunny, you got the revenge angle to the fight, and that makes a good sell.
Of you’re Matchroom Boxing promoter Eddie Hearn, it makes perfect sense to pump the brakes on this fight because it’s not a winnable fight for Sunny on paper. If Hearn makes this match, he’ll lose a world champion, and who knows if Sunny will ever win another title for the remainder of his career?
Martinez welcomes Sunny fight
“It would be an honor to fight Sunny, a great opportunity and to put behind what happened in the fight with his brother Charlie. He has a belt, and we want to unify, so gladly we’d go to England for the fight,” said Julio Cesar Martinez.
Been told the Martinez fight is close to getting made, I know Ed, Edd and Eddy never wanted anything to do with this fight – so I hope they don’t avoid me.

It would be a good idea for Sunny and Matchroom Boxing promoter Eddie Hearn to think carefully before they take this fight with Martinez because there’s so little chance of success.
