The lightweight division is on fire right now, and is perhaps the most interesting division in boxing today.
George Kambosos is the reigning WBA/WBO/IBF lightweight world champion, and Devin Haney is the reigning WBC champion. And then you still have former champions Vasyl Lomachenko and Teofimo Lopez, and you likewise have the regular WBA champion Gervonta Tank Davis. In addition, Kambosos is also recognized as the WBC franchise champion. Those are five talented standouts in a captivating weight class. But unfortunately, the entire lightweight landscape acts as a microcosm of the great abundance of alphabet soup that plagues professional boxing.
Forgetting the entire alphabet mess going on and all of the confusion and shenanigans that come with that territory, the lightweight boxing landscape has a great abundance of talent beginning with the ‘Big 5’ in Kambosos, Lopez, Lomachenko, Davis, and Haney. We have already seen 2 of these 5 pairings mix it up, when Lopez had competitive and entertaining bouts against Lomachenko and Kambosos. Any fights involving any 2 of these 5 would surely produce an interesting lightweight showdown.
In addition to the Big 5, you have other undefeated contenders like Ryan Garcia and William Zepeda, both of whom add greater intrigue to an already talented group at the top. There is likewise the possibility that someone from 130 might join the mix, and at the same time it is equally possible that some of these boxers currently competing at 135 might make the jump to 140 sooner than later. But right now, the 135 pound division has a lot of talent with no clear standout as the best of the bunch. Hopefully these talented prizefighters will begin mixing it up more in 2022, because there are a lot of potentially interesting matches to be made.
This edition of Rummy’s Corner will provide a quick break down of the current boxing landscape in the lightweight division, and how we got to where we are with the gigantic alphabet mess that not only plagues this division, but indeed plagues the entire sport of professional boxing.
