Andy Robertson breaks silence on Liverpool red card but avoids other debate

Andy Robertson has taken responsibility for his red card against Tottenham Hotspur, but said it was best if he did not speak about the other incidents that went against Liverpool.

Robertson was heavily involved in the 2-2 draw between Tottenham and Liverpool on Sunday. He assisted his side’s first goal with a cross for Diogo Jota and scored their second with a low header.

However, less than 10 minutes after his goal, Robertson received a red card for a poor challenge on Tottenham full-back Emerson Royal.

Robertson swung at the Brazilian and took him rather than the ball. The referee initially booked him, but checked with VAR and upgraded to a red card.

There was no change to the scoreline after, though, with Spurs already having equalised by the time their visitors went down to 10 men.

The conversation after the game has been dominated by the officiating. Robertson’s dismissal has not split opinion too much, but the fact that Harry Kane was not sent off for a studs-up challenge on the Scotland captain in the first half has raised questions.

Robertson has now broken his silence on what happened, hinting at his club’s dissatisfaction with the Kane incident but taking the blame for his own red card.

The left-back posted on Instagram: “I was brought up to take responsibility when you’ve done something wrong and I have to admit my challenge was poor and misjudged. My mistake giving them the chance to make the decision. Gutted!

“Probably best I don’t speak about the other things in the match, other than to say how proud I am of the rest of the team. Me aside, the boys were different class in unbelievably difficult circumstances.

“Support unreal as well in difficult times! Wish we could have rewarded it with a win!”

Klopp had no complaints over Robertson red

Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp aired his dissatisfaction with referee Paul Tierney in his post-match interviews.

He was adamant that Kane should have been sent off for his foul on Robertson. But as for his own player’s dismissal, he accepted it was the right call.

Asked if Kane should have been sent off, Klopp replied: “Yes definitely.

“You can give Robbo a red card. It is not the smartest challenge but that is definitely a red card. No doubt about it.

“His leg was in the air, it was pure coincidence. Harry cannot judge it. If Robbo’s leg is on the ground it is a broken leg.

“We have a VAR sitting there and he thinks have a look again at Robertson again. Fine that’s what he is there for. But what did he do in that situation?”
