Michael Thomas discussed his expectations for former Liverpool star Philippe Coutinho following his loan move to Aston Villa.
The signing of Coutinho could prove vital for Aston Villa. Indeed, the Brazilian was one of the most dangerous players in the Premier League during his last spell in England.
He is a Champions League winner – triumphing on loan at Bayern Munich from Barcelona – who is a step in the right direction for Villa. What’s more, Coutinho has performed exceptionally in spells of his career.
Admittedly, there has been a drop off in form for the 29-year-old since his move to Barcelona in 2018.
However, his loan move to Bayern in 2019 showed he still has a lot to offer. Indeed, Coutinho contributed to 20 goals in 38 games during his spell in Germany.
His Premier League stats are also not to be sniffed at. Coutinho scored 41 goals and provided 37 assists in 152 games in the competition while at Liverpool.
Former Liverpool man Thomas feels as if the midfielder still has a lot to offer.
“Villa get a player that can be truly amazing on his day and Coutinho gets the chance to prove he still has what it takes to perform at the highest level,” he said via Caught Offside.
“I am not sure if he will be able to produce the displays we got used to seeing in a Liverpool shirt, but if he can then it’s an absolute steal for Villa.”
Of course, there is a chance he may not live up to the expectations he has set for himself. However, Villa will hope he can put in some top performances under former team-mate Steven Gerrard, and fill the void left by Jack Grealish in the summer.
Coutinho soon to be joined by Digne
Villa are having quite the January transfer window already. Gerrard has clearly been given licence to build a squad he is happy with, and he is doing just that.
Lucas Digne looks as if he will soon become a Villan, in a £25million move from Everton.
That move is a big one for Villa, given the quality the French left-back possesses.
A medical is now the only obstacle between making Digne Gerrard’s second signing as Villa boss. Fans will be very happy with the business the former Liverpool star has conducted so far.
