Tottenham are among a trio of Premier League clubs in contention for a young goalkeeper who faces an uncertain future, it has been claimed.
Spurs haven’t had to worry about their number one spot for nearly a decade now with club captain Hugo Lloris commanding the role. However, his back-up has chopped and changed in recent years. Currently, Pierluigi Gollini occupies the spot.
However, it remains to be seen if the 26-year-old’s loan move from Atalanta will be made permanent in the summer.
With Lloris now 35, it would arguably make more sense to bring through a younger shot stopper who can learn on the job from the World Cup winner.
Then the player in question can be the one to eventually take his place. After all, his contract expires in 2024.
A potentially ideal candidate for this role could be Etienne Green, a 21-year-old ‘keeper who coincidentally plays for Saint Etienne in France.
TEAMtalk exclusively revealed last October that there was interest in him from north London.
And it seems that hasn’t gone away, despite a rough patch for the England under-21 international. He has fallen out of favour after an injury.
But But Football Club report Green’s name has been ‘circulating’ amongst Spurs, as well as Southampton and Crystal Palace.
Covering his ‘difficult’ season so far, they claim he has been ‘less decisive’ than his breakthrough year in Ligue 1.
However, he stands at 6’4″ and despite moving across the Channel aged four, chose to represent his country of birth on the international stage.
Those factors, mixed with his huge potential, make him an appealing prospect for a Premier League club.
Tottenham chief speaks out
Meanwhile, Tottenham chief Fabio Paratici has fired back at those criticising the club over their January dealings, and took a swipe at the players he axed.
Spurs suffered familiar heartbreak when being pipped to the signatures of several players in January. They appeared odds on to sign Wolves winger Adama Traore, only for Barcelona to hijack the move.
It was a similar story regarding Colombian forward Luis Diaz. On that occasion, it was Liverpool who acted decisively to snag the former FC Porto superstar.
Tottenham rescued their transfer window by signing Juventus pair Rodrigo Bentancur and Dejan Kulusevski on deadline day. But only after coming under ridicule for missing out on their top targets.
And speaking to Spurs TV (via the PA), Paratici fired back at the dissenting voices…
