West Ham will face a battle with Leicester and Sporting Lisbon to sign the fastest player from the Bundesliga this season, per a report.
Mainz centre-back Jerimiah St. Juste is the man in question and he could be a vital addition to David Moyes’ squad. Due to the Hammers’ superb up-turn in fortunes in recent seasons, they now find themselves in need of depth at the spine of their team.
Indeed, their European excursions are stretching Moyes’ squad and their defence is aging. Both Angelo Ogbonna and Craig Dawson are now into their thirties.
To stay at this level of competition in the coming years, extra strength in depth may be required – especially at a position as critical as centre-half.
St. Juste is a man who could fit West Ham’s requirements nicely and according to Portuguese newspaper Jornal de Notícias, the Dutchman is on their radar. What’s more, it’s claimed St. Juste’s price tag may only be around £8m which could prove a bargain for a player of his potential.
25-year-old St. Juste would be a breath of fresh air around West Ham’s camp and his versatility could help if the injury bug bites.
In the current campaign, St. Juste managed a recorded pace of 36.63 kilometres-per-hour. That figure is an eye-opening one when compared to Adama Traore’s top speed this season (38 kilometres-per-hour).
This recorded pace also made him the fastest player in the Bundesliga this season, surpassing the likes of Alphonso Davies, Erling Haaland and Leroy Sané.
Why Jeremiah St. Juste is so sought after
Over the eight appearances he has made in the Bundesliga so far this season, St. Juste has averaged 1.6 tackles and 1.8 interceptions each game. By contrast, Craig Dawson has only averaged 0.8 tackles and 0.9 interceptions according to WhoScored.
However, the report notes West Ham may not have a summer swoop all their own way.
Leicester are also said to be in the running for St. Juste’s signature, though they have greater depth than West Ham possess in the spine of their team.
French wonderkid Wesley Fofana will be back in full flow after overcoming his injury nightmare next season. If he picks up where he left off, he will be irreplaceable in Brendan Rodgers’ team.
As well as Fofana, Leicester also have the likes of Jonny Evans, Jannik Vestergaard, Çağlar Söyüncü and Daniel Amartey in their ranks.
Portuguese powerhouse Sporting Lisbon are also deemed in the mix for St. Juste.
