Veron Mosengo-Omba, the general secretary of the Confederation of African Football (CAF), has officially tendered his resignation amid escalating unrest within the organisation. Although he cited retirement as his reason for stepping down, his exit coincides with significant controversy sparked by the revocation of Senegal’s hosting rights for the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (Afcon) and the abrupt postponement of the women’s tournament.

Having surpassed the organisation’s stipulated retirement threshold of 63 years, the 66-year-old Mosengo-Omba faced mounting criticism for prolonging his tenure. Additionally, allegations emerged from certain staff members accusing him of fostering a detrimental working environment. Nevertheless, an internal inquiry launched in response to these grievances ultimately absolved him of any misconduct.

Leadership Transition in CAF Amidst Internal Strife

Appointed in 2021, Mosengo-Omba’s departure paves the way for Samson Adamu, who is set to assume the role of acting general secretary. This leadership change takes place against the backdrop of a turbulent period for CAF, underscored by contentious administrative decisions affecting key continental football events.
