This August, San Francisco will once again become the epicenter for the world’s top Pokémon players as they gather to compete in the prestigious Pokémon World Championships. Marking a significant milestone, the event coincides with the franchise’s 30th anniversary celebration, offering fans a unique blend of competitive excitement and festive homage to the beloved series.
The Pokémon Company revealed plans two years ago to bring the World Championships back to San Francisco, a city that last hosted the tournament eight years ago. This year’s event, however, extends beyond the battles themselves. Alongside the championships, the Pokémon XP experience invites enthusiasts to engage more deeply with the franchise, promising immersive activities and commemorative celebrations.
A Legacy of Competition and Community
Established in 2004, the Pokémon World Championships have evolved into the ultimate gathering for elite players worldwide. Initially focused solely on the Pokémon Trading Card Game, the tournament expanded in 2008 to include the video game series with the debut of Pokémon Diamond and Pearl. Over time, the event has welcomed additional titles, such as Pokkén Tournament DX—though it was last featured in 2022—as well as Pokémon GO and Pokémon Unite, reflecting the franchise’s broadening competitive landscape.
Participation in the Championships is highly exclusive, granted only by invitation. Invitations are earned through Championship Points accrued at a variety of sanctioned tournaments, which span from local store events to regional and international contests. This rigorous qualification process ensures that only the most skilled and dedicated players represent their regions on this global stage.
