The Senior Citizens League (TSCL) has adjusted its forecast for the 2027 Social Security cost-of-living adjustment (COLA), lowering the expected increase to 3.8%. Despite this downward revision, the projected rise remains significant, ranking as the 17th highest increase since the Social Security Administration began implementing automatic yearly boosts in 1977.
This update follows recent inflation data from June, which showed a moderation in price growth. While this easing gave the Federal Reserve some leeway in its interest rate decisions, inflation continues to run above the central bank’s 2% target, sustaining concerns about persistent cost pressures. In turn, these inflation trends influence the annual COLA calculations, which are designed to help Social Security benefits keep pace with rising living costs.
Impact of the 2027 COLA on Monthly Benefits
The amount each Social Security recipient receives depends on their individual earnings history, so the effect of the 2027 COLA will vary among beneficiaries. Based on current figures, however, TSCL estimates that the average monthly benefit of $2,026.41 would increase by $77 under a 3.8% COLA, raising the typical payment to approximately $2,103.41 per month.
Despite this boost, TSCL emphasizes that the new average benefit would still fall short of covering basic living expenses for seniors. The organization’s calculations place the monthly cost of rent for a one-bedroom apartment and other essentials at about $2,700, highlighting a substantial gap between income and necessary expenditures for many beneficiaries.
Shannon Benton, executive director of TSCL, commented on the forecast, noting that while a 3.8% increase represents an improvement over last year’s 2.8% adjustment, it remains insufficient to fully address the financial challenges faced by seniors. She emphasized that the fundamental purpose of the COLA program is to help seniors maintain a dignified standard of living, a goal that remains elusive for many despite the projected raise.
