Following the release of ‘28 Years Later: The Bone Temple’ earlier this January, the post-apocalyptic saga continues to evolve, with the third film now confirmed to be in development. Although the production schedule and release date remain uncertain, director Danny Boyle has verified that the project is moving forward, fueled by ongoing interest from fans.

Speaking at the Zurich Film Festival, Boyle revealed that a script for the third installment has already been penned by Alex Garland, who co-wrote the original film’s screenplay. “28 Years 3, or whatever it ends up being called, will get made because people keep asking about it,” Boyle told Variety. Despite this assurance, the timeline for filming and release has yet to be finalized.

Cillian Murphy to reprise a major role

Boyle also disclosed that Cillian Murphy, who played the lead character Jim in the original ‘28 Days Later’, will return with a substantial part in the new movie. “It will have a lot of Cillian Murphy in it,” Boyle stated, though he humorously left open the question of whether Murphy would reprise some of his more iconic moments from earlier films.

As the franchise expands its narrative beyond the groundwork laid by the original and the recent sequel, anticipation for the concluding chapter builds. With Garland’s script in hand and Murphy’s involvement confirmed, the next phase of this dystopian saga is poised to continue captivating audiences once production begins.
