Alessia Russo showcased a stunning performance on Wednesday, securing a 3-0 victory for Arsenal Women against Benfica in the UEFA Women’s Champions League group stage. Russo’s hat trick propelled the Gunners upward in the standings during the 2026/27 season’s league phase.

Russo initiated the scoring before halftime, expertly finishing a precise pass from Caitlin Foord with a sharp strike to the far post. This goal was particularly momentous as it equaled Fran Kirby’s record of 21 Champions League goals by an English player. Yet, Russo’s night was far from over.

Alessia Russo Breaks Fran Kirby’s Record in Arsenal vs Benfica Match

In the second half, Russo extended Arsenal’s lead in the 66th minute by converting a looping header from a Steph Catley set piece. Later, with just over ten minutes remaining, Russo completed her hat trick by calmly slotting a penalty after Catarina Amado fouled Caitlin Foord inside the box. This remarkable trio of goals raised Russo’s total to 23 across all rounds of the UWCL, officially surpassing Kirby’s previous record.

This victory marked Arsenal’s first consecutive win of the season, coming on the heels of their recent triumph in the North London Derby against Tottenham Hotspur. With seven points accumulated from three league-phase matches, Arsenal solidified their position in the competition, while Benfica remains 11th with three points.

Manager Renée Slegers, who entrusted Russo with the captain’s armband for the match, expressed high praise for the forward’s contribution to the team’s success.
