Alexandra Eala advanced to the third round of the 2026 Canadian Open on Wednesday, delivering a historic victory in Toronto. Seeded 25th, Eala overcame American Alycia Parks in a hard-fought three-set match, 6-1, 4-6, 6-2.
The win marked Eala’s second consecutive triumph in Toronto, coming just two days after she claimed her first WTA singles title in Washington. Her performance at the Canadian Open has been particularly notable, as no Filipino player, male or female, had previously won a main-draw match at this event.
Strong Start and Resilience Secure the Win
Eala began the match with momentum, capturing five consecutive games after a 1-1 tie to close out the first set decisively. Parks rebounded in the second set, maintaining her composure under pressure and securing a late break to even the match at one set apiece.
In the decisive third set, the 21-year-old Filipino star regained control. She broke Parks at 2-2 and then won the following three games in succession, sealing the victory after one hour and 51 minutes on court.
“I tried to come out hot and just take all the opportunities that I could, because she doesn’t really give you much,” Eala reflected after the match.
This victory improved Eala’s record to 6-1 in opening rounds at WTA 1000 tournaments this year. Looking ahead, she is scheduled to face Caty McNally in the third round on Friday, continuing her impressive run at the Canadian Open.
