Alexandra Eala, the rising Filipino tennis star, has decided to prioritize national pride over her professional tour commitments by opting to represent the Philippines at the 2026 Asian Games in Nagoya, Japan. This choice comes at a potential cost, as she plans to skip the mandatory 2026 China Open in Beijing, a move that could result in a $10,000 fine and a loss of ranking points imposed by the Women’s Tennis Association (WTA).
Commitment to the Asian Games Despite WTA Penalties
Despite the looming penalties, the Philippine Tennis Association has proactively sought a waiver from the WTA to protect Eala from sanctions. However, with the decision still pending, the federation has made it clear that Eala’s participation in the Asian Games is non-negotiable. “Alex will definitely play at the Asian Games regardless of the WTA decision,” stated executive director Tonette Mendoza.
Currently ranked No. 18 in the world, Eala enters the Asian Games as the top seed in both women’s singles and doubles. Her impressive track record includes winning two bronze medals at the 2023 Asian Games and securing her first WTA 500 title at the Mubadala DC Open, rounding off a successful 2026 season.
Filipino supporters have been a constant presence at Eala’s recent Grand Slam matches, filling the stands and offering passionate support. Eala has often expressed her gratitude for their encouragement. After her second-round victory at this year’s US Open, she remarked, “They’re so passionate and so loving and definitely make me feel loved. They make me feel at home.”

Abraham Tolentino, president of the Philippine Olympic Committee, has publicly supported Eala’s decision, underscoring the significance of her commitment to national representation over individual tour obligations.
Earlier in the tournament, Eala showcased her talents by defeating Japan’s Himeno Sakatsume, advancing to the quarterfinals of the 2026 Philippine Women’s Open.
