Folarin Balogun played a pivotal role in the United States’ 2-0 victory over Bosnia and Herzegovina, scoring the opening goal before receiving a red card as the hosts secured their place in the FIFA World Cup Round of 16.

The match saw the United States, one of the tournament co-hosts, withstand a challenging final 30 minutes with only 10 players on the field. Despite being reduced in numbers, the team maintained their composure and defensive discipline, eventually clinching the win through a stunning late free-kick by Malik Tillman. This victory sets up a Round of 16 clash against Belgium.

Bosnia and Herzegovina started the game on the front foot, creating early chances that tested the American defense. Edin Dzeko was influential in orchestrating attacks, notably assisting Ermedin Demirovic, whose shot was comfortably saved by goalkeeper Matt Freese. The Bosnian side also threatened from set-pieces, with Freese parrying a dangerous inswinging corner from Kerim Alajbegovic.

As the first half progressed, the United States gradually asserted control over the game. They appeared to have taken the lead when Balogun converted a pass from Weston McKennie, but the goal was ruled out for offside. However, the breakthrough came just before halftime.

Balogun’s Impact and Subsequent Sending Off

In a decisive moment, defender Tim Ream intercepted a Bosnian goal kick, quickly feeding the ball to Tillman, who found Balogun in space. Balogun calmly finished past goalkeeper Nikola Vasilj, giving the United States a deserved lead heading into the break.

After the interval, Bosnia sought to overturn the deficit, but the game took a dramatic turn in the 64th minute. Following a VAR review, Balogun was shown a straight red card for a late challenge on Tarik Muharemovic. This forced the United States to play the rest of the match with ten men.

Despite the numerical disadvantage, the team managed to withstand Bosnia’s pressure. Their resilience was rewarded when Malik Tillman delivered a superb free-kick late in the game, sealing the victory and confirming America’s progression to the knockout stages.
