Billie Jean King, the legendary tennis Hall of Famer, added another remarkable achievement to her storied life by receiving an honorary degree from the University of Oxford on الأربعاء. This recognition marked a significant highlight in what has already been a summer filled with academic accomplishments for King.
Honored Among Distinguished Company at Oxford
The 82-year-old sports icon was among nine distinguished individuals honored at the prestigious Sheldonian Theatre during Oxford’s traditional Encaenia ceremony. Alongside King, notable figures such as former New Zealand Prime Minister Dame Jacinda Ardern and acclaimed filmmaker Henry Louis Gates Jr. were also recipients of honorary degrees.
Prior to the formal event, a procession featuring the honorees and various dignitaries made its way through the historic city of Oxford. The recipients then signed the Honorary Degrees Book at the Divinity School, a customary part of the ceremony. Due to an ongoing heatwave affecting the area, the university modified its usual protocol by allowing jackets and gowns to be optional and implemented additional measures to help attendees cope with the high temperatures.
Reflecting on the occasion, King emphasized the importance of lifelong learning, stating, “Education, at any age, is a powerful tool and we must always keep learning and learning how to learn.” She described the honor as both “an honor and a privilege.”
This UK accolade followed closely on the heels of another milestone: just one month earlier, King celebrated her graduation from California State University, Los Angeles, where she earned a bachelor’s degree in history. This achievement came 65 years after she initially enrolled in 1961, a journey interrupted by her pursuit of a groundbreaking tennis career.
