Canada secured a historic victory over South Africa, winning 1-0 thanks to a stoppage-time goal by Stephen Eustaquio, and advanced to the Round of 16 in the World Cup for the first time ever.

The tightly contested match, featuring two teams making their knockout-stage debut, appeared headed for extra time until Eustaquio unleashed a powerful, first-time shot from the edge of the penalty area that found the bottom corner, ending South Africa’s hopes.

Jesse Marsch‘s Canadian squad will now face either the Netherlands or Morocco in the Round of 16, which is scheduled to take place in Houston on July 4. Meanwhile, South Africa’s World Cup journey concludes with this defeat.

Canada’s Persistence Pays Off

Throughout the match, Canada maintained the upper hand, dominating possession and creating multiple scoring opportunities. Defender Derek Cornelius came close with a header from a free-kick delivered by Eustaquio, but his effort went wide. On the other end, South African goalkeeper Ronwen Williams was instrumental, making several key saves, while teammate Mbekezeli Mbokazi executed a vital goal-line clearance to preserve a goalless deadlock.

Canada’s attack gained fresh energy when Alphonso Davies returned from a hamstring injury to make his first appearance of the tournament in the 75th minute, quickly enhancing Canada’s offensive threat in the final stages of the game.

The decisive moment came in stoppage time after a cross from Jacob Shaffelburg was only partially cleared by the South African defense. Eustaquio controlled the ball with his chest and struck a superb shot that sealed the victory, sending the Canadian team and fans into celebration.
