Colombia clinched the final berth in the FIFA World Cup Round of 16 with a narrow 1-0 win over Ghana in Kansas City. The decisive goal came courtesy of Jhon Arias, whose first-half finish secured a last-16 clash against Switzerland in Vancouver.
The match saw an early disruption for the Colombian side as Jhon Cordoba was forced off due to injury, prompting the introduction of Luis Suarez within the opening minutes. Ghana, too, faced an early setback when Marvin Senaya had to leave the field, resulting in an enforced substitution for coach Otto Addo‘s squad.
Control and Chances Define Colombia’s Victory
The game’s only goal arrived in the 14th minute. Suarez exhibited impressive tenacity on the right flank to keep the ball alive and then delivered a precise pass to Arias, who calmly finished from close range past goalkeeper Lawrence Ati Zigi. This strike proved sufficient to decide the tightly contested encounter.
Carlos Queiroz‘s Colombian side dominated possession for significant stretches and fashioned the clearer opportunities throughout the match. Although they could not add to their lead before halftime, chances fell to Luis Diaz, who missed a promising effort, and Johan Mojica, whose powerful header was expertly saved by Ati Zigi.
After the break, Colombia continued to press forward. Diaz saw a goal disallowed for offside and tested Ati Zigi again with a strong attempt, while Juan Quintero also came close to extending the lead. Meanwhile, Ghana struggled to mount any meaningful threat, failing to register a single shot on target during the entire match.
