Dave Bautista has stepped into the role of Kratos in Amazon MGM Studios’ upcoming ‘God of War’ series following a serious injury sustained by the original actor, Ryan Hurst. The production experienced a delay as a result of Hurst’s injury, with filming now postponed until this fall. Bautista has since undergone rigorous training to embody the iconic character’s formidable physique.
Sharing his progress on Instagram, Bautista revealed that he has added over 20 pounds of muscle, reaching a weight of approximately 250 pounds. This physical transformation aligns with the demanding appearance of Kratos from the PlayStation video game series, underscoring Bautista’s commitment to the role.
From Norse Mythology to the Small Screen
The Amazon MGM adaptation draws directly from the latest entries in the ‘God of War’ video game franchise—specifically, ‘God of War’ and ‘God of War Ragnarok’—which pivot away from the series’ original Greek mythological roots and immerse themselves in Norse mythology. The story centers on Kratos, played by Bautista, and his son Atreus, portrayed by Callum Vinson. Their journey begins after the passing of Faye, Kratos’s wife and Atreus’s mother, as they undertake the solemn task of scattering her ashes atop a mountain. This pilgrimage also serves as a means to deepen the bond between father and son.
Helming the series is Ronald D. Moore, acclaimed for his work on ‘Battlestar Galactica,’ ‘Outlander,’ and ‘For All Mankind.’ His involvement brings considerable experience in adapting complex narratives for television. In addition to ‘God of War,’ Amazon is actively expanding its portfolio of video game adaptations, with projects in development based on the ‘Tomb Raider’ and ‘Mass Effect’ franchises, signaling a growing trend of bringing beloved interactive stories to streaming platforms.
