Leeds United are progressing with negotiations to acquire Shea Charles from Southampton, following a bid exceeding £20 million. The Saints are reportedly open to the transfer and have identified Josh Mulligan from Hibernian as a potential replacement. Although the exact fee remains undisclosed, sources indicate that the deal is moving closer to completion.
Meanwhile, Leeds’ defensive options face uncertainty with Illan Meslier expected to depart. Earlier this year, the club turned down an offer for goalkeeper Lucas Perri that matched his valuation, according to director Adam Pope. With contracts of goalkeepers Karl Darlow and James Cairns nearing expiration, Leeds are carefully considering their options amid growing external interest, particularly in Darlow.
Defensive Reinforcements and Contract Talks
In addition to Charles, Leeds have been linked with Nico Elvedi of Borussia Mönchengladbach. The Swiss centre-back, who is right-footed and entering the final year of his contract, could provide cover on the right side of defense for an estimated £7.4 million. However, the club’s primary focus remains securing left-footed defensive depth, especially if Pascal Struijk, whose contract has just one year remaining, chooses to leave. Former Leeds player and club legend Gary McAllister has publicly urged the club to offer Struijk a new deal to retain him.
Elsewhere, former Leeds striker Patrick Bamford, now at Sheffield United, is training with QPR’s Ronnie Edwards ahead of a promotion push, as both clubs look to improve on their lower-half finishes from last season.
Adding to the midfield puzzle, Manchester United have shown interest in ex-Leeds midfielder Tyler Adams, who has impressed since joining Bournemouth. Reports suggest a potential £30 million fee for Adams, a pursuit that could influence Leeds’ ongoing transfer plans, including their moves for Shea Charles and decisions regarding Karl Darlow’s future.
Leeds have also held positive discussions with free agent Harry Wilson, amid competition from Everton and Aston Villa. This potential signing could further bolster the squad as the club navigates an active summer transfer window.
