Julian Nagelsmann, head coach of the German national football team, emphasized on Sunday that only a World Cup victory will silence the critics questioning his squad’s credentials as they prepare for their last-32 encounter against Paraguay.

Despite securing the top spot in Group E with a game remaining, courtesy of a commanding 7-1 victory over Curacao and a narrow 2-1 win against Ivory Coast, Germany’s recent 1-2 loss to Ecuador has intensified doubts about their potential to advance deep into the tournament.

Looking ahead to Monday’s knockout match near Boston against Paraguay, who finished third in their group, Nagelsmann remains focused on the immediate challenge. Should Germany advance, they could face a formidable French side in the round of 16.

Pressure to Deliver in Every Match

Addressing the media during his pre-game press conference, Nagelsmann made it clear that his team’s priority is to win each match. “When you talk about the German national team, it is all about trying to win every game. It is all about winning the game tomorrow,” he stated firmly.

He further explained that managing expectations comes down to maintaining strong self-confidence and providing his players with a clear tactical plan. This approach, he believes, helps the players feel comfortable and capable on the pitch, enabling them to showcase their abilities effectively.

“It is all about winning in soccer. If you win, everything is perfect. If you lose, everything is shit. So we have to win tomorrow,” Nagelsmann stressed, underlining the high stakes of the upcoming fixture.

Reflecting on the recent loss to Ecuador, the former Bayern Munich coach admitted that his team had fallen into what he described as “tactical suicide,” despite having taken an early lead in that match. This candid assessment highlights the challenges Germany faces in maintaining consistency at this stage of the tournament.
