At San Diego Comic-Con 2026, Marvel Studios unveiled new developments for the Marvel Cinematic Universe, including the introduction of a new Black Panther and the upcoming debut of Ghost Rider. Among the highlights was a fresh look at ‘Avengers: Doomsday’, featuring the return of Robert Downey Jr. in the role of Doctor Doom.
During the panel, Downey Jr. appeared wearing a striking jacket adorned with several mysterious symbols. These marks, identified as Latverian runes, were visible on the sleeves, the right lapel, and the pockets of the garment. While the meaning behind these runes was not immediately explained, an insightful discovery soon followed.
Decoding the Latverian Runes
Grant DeArmitt of PopVerse successfully deciphered the cryptic symbols, a breakthrough made possible by an earlier activation event held at SXSW London. The runes embedded in Downey Jr.’s jacket reference themes central to the character of Victor von Doom—justice and revenge—offering fans a subtle nod to the narrative threads woven into the upcoming film.
This clever integration of costume design and storytelling reflects Marvel’s attention to detail, enriching the anticipation for ‘Avengers: Doomsday’. The campaign surrounding the film also included promotional items such as “DOM Latveria Coffee,” further immersing audiences into the lore of Latveria and its enigmatic ruler.
