Spain’s Isaac Peral (S-81), the first of the new S-80-class submarines constructed by Navantia, successfully completed a pivotal live-fire exercise in the Atlantic Ocean, showcasing its combat prowess by sinking a target with a single torpedo.

During the exercise known as SINKEX 26, conducted west of the Canary Islands, the submarine destroyed the decommissioned patrol vessel Infanta Elena (P-76). The الإسبانية Navy confirmed that the target was eliminated with just one torpedo, underscoring the precision and effectiveness of the new vessel’s weapon systems.

Demonstrating Strategic Maritime Strength

The الإسبانية Navy described the exercise as a comprehensive test of the Isaac Peral’s capabilities—not only its firepower but also its ability to deter potential threats and exert control over maritime domains. The operation also served to evaluate the crew’s preparedness under conditions designed to closely replicate real combat.

Highlighting the strategic impact of the submarine, the Navy emphasized that the vessel’s true strength lies in its stealth. “The silent certainty of its presence,” they noted, “knowing that a submarine could be patrolling undetected anywhere in our waters, with the capability to neutralize threats at long range, provides a significant security guarantee without the need to engage in conflict.”

This exercise was not merely about sinking a ship—it symbolized Spain’s reestablished operational submarine capability, capable of striking naval targets covertly. SINKEX 26 stands as the most prominent public demonstration so far of the S-80 program’s operational readiness and strategic value.
