Premier League champions Arsenal have secured the signature of Bruno Guimaraes, the captain of Newcastle United, in a deal reportedly worth £75 million ($101.2 million), according to announcements from both clubs on Saturday.

The 28-year-old Brazilian midfielder, who spent four-and-a-half seasons with Newcastle, has committed to a long-term contract with Arsenal, who famously ended a 22-year trophy drought in England’s top flight last season.

Guimaraes stands out as the most significant acquisition of this transfer window for Arsenal, joining recent signings Illan Meslier and Christos Tzolis at the Emirates Stadium.

Strengthening the Core

Arsenal’s sporting director, Andrea Berta, emphasized the importance of Guimaraes’ arrival: “With Bruno joining us, we are further strengthening the heart of our team.” Berta highlighted the player’s versatility and contributions on the field, noting that Guimaraes “can play as a defensive midfielder and as a box-to-box player,” while consistently delivering goals and assists.

He further explained that Guimaraes’ presence will enable manager Mikel Arteta to enhance the team’s playing style and boost internal competitiveness—both critical factors in sustaining the high standards required to contend for major trophies.

While the exact transfer fee was not officially disclosed, Newcastle confirmed that the amount ranks among the top ten highest fees ever received for a player aged 28 or older.

Interestingly, Guimaraes had been linked with a move to Arsenal before, back in January 2022, prior to his transfer from Lyon to Newcastle. Now, after several years, the midfielder completes the switch to the Gunners, marking a significant moment for both the player and the club.
