Ashley Sanchez made history for the North Carolina Courage by shattering the club’s single-season goal-scoring record during a decisive 2-0 victory over Angel City last night. Leading the NWSL Golden Boot race, Sanchez’s two goals pushed her tally to a new high, firmly establishing her as one of the league’s most prolific scorers this season.
After opening the scoring in the 41st minute to match Lynn Biyendolo’s 2019 record of 14 goals, Sanchez secured her record-breaking 15th by capitalizing on a long ball from goalkeeper Kailen Sheridan. Demonstrating exceptional pace and skill, she outmaneuvered three defenders before finishing clinically.
This brace marked Sanchez’s second in just four days, following her recent performance in the 2-1 win over Boston. Meanwhile, Sheridan not only played a key role in the buildup but also earned her second career assist, setting a new league record for goalkeepers.
Angel City’s Streak Ends Amid Grueling Schedule
For Angel City, the defeat ended a promising four-match unbeaten streak. The team had just managed to hold league leaders Gotham to a goalless draw on Sunday, highlighting the demanding schedule and quick turnarounds faced by teams this season.
Interim coach Leif Gunnar Smerud acknowledged the physical toll of such a rigorous slate, noting, “We played a top team in a really good performance that demanded a lot from us on Sunday, and now we played again today. It’s natural that this is gonna cost some energy, and we need to make sure we are recovered.”
Looking ahead, Sanchez and the Courage are set to visit Kansas City, currently ranked seventh, on Saturday at 6:30 PM ET, with the match airing on ION. Meanwhile, Angel City will face Boston Legacy on Monday at 8 PM ET, broadcast on CBS.
