Aston Villa extended their flawless run in the UEFA Champions League group stage with a commanding 3-1 victory over Norwegian outfit Viking at Villa Park. This result bolsters their bid for a top-eight position in the competition’s league phase.
The home side asserted their dominance early, with Ross Barkley breaking the deadlock halfway through the first half. Later, Emiliano Buendia calmly converted a penalty to double Villa’s advantage, setting the tone for the remainder of the match.
Shortly after the hour mark, an own goal by Viking defender Henrik Heggheim further secured the three points for Villa. Although Viking managed to pull one back late in the game, it was insufficient to threaten the hosts’ control.
Steady control under Unai Emery’s guidance
Villa’s manager, Unai Emery, described the match as a “very safe” performance. Speaking to TNT Sports, he noted that the first half was dominated by his side, who appeared comfortable and in control.
He admitted the second half saw a slight drop in intensity, with Villa conceding several corners, but overall, the team maintained superiority throughout the 90 minutes. Emery expressed satisfaction with securing the three points, emphasizing the team’s dominance.
This win marks Villa’s third consecutive victory in the Champions League group stage, following a narrow 3-2 win over Club Brugge and an emphatic 6-0 triumph against Fenerbahce. The team’s momentum has also carried into domestic competition, as they have now won five of their last six matches across all tournaments, signaling a strong recovery after a sluggish start to the season.
Despite Viking’s recent impressive 3-3 draw against six-time European champions Bayern Munich, they struggled to impose themselves on the game at Villa Park. Notably, Viking’s forward Nicolas Jackson had two opportunities with free headers, but both attempts were easily saved by Villa’s goalkeeper Arild.
