Jeff Bezos, the founder of Amazon, is reported to be part of a consortium close to acquiring a one-third stake in Premier League club Liverpool FC. This development signals another significant investment move within English football, as American capital continues to flow into the sport.

According to Sky News, the investor group is led by Amit Bhatia, who is notably the son-in-law of Indian steel magnate Lakshmi Mittal. The consortium also includes Eduardo Saverin, co-founder of Facebook. This alliance brings together some of the world’s wealthiest figures aiming to make a strategic minority investment in the club.

The current owners, Fenway Sports Group (FSG), confirmed last month that they had received an approach from Bhatia’s group. An FSG spokesperson told AFP, “An investment consortium led, managed, and represented by Amit Bhatia has expressed interest in making a strategic minority investment in Liverpool Football Club.”

Before this, Bhatia was involved as a shareholder in Championship side Queens Park Rangers, adding experience in football club ownership to the consortium’s portfolio.

Valuation and Wider Context

The consortium is reportedly finalizing a deal to purchase about a one-third share in the club, with FSG expected to announce the transaction imminently, possibly as early as this week, according to Sky News. The investment would value Liverpool, the 20-time English league champions, at approximately $6 billion.

At 62 years old, Bezos ranks among the richest individuals globally, with Forbes estimating his net worth at over $280 billion. Saverin’s wealth is estimated at $33 billion, underscoring the scale of financial firepower behind this potential acquisition.

Bezos has previously explored ownership opportunities in American sports, including investigations into acquiring the NFL’s Seattle Seahawks and Washington Commanders, though he ultimately chose not to proceed with those deals.
