After more than four decades embodying one of horror cinema’s most iconic figures, Bruce Campbell has officially announced his permanent retirement from the role of Ash Williams in the ‘Evil Dead’ franchise. This significant update came during a candid interview with Screen Rant, where Campbell confirmed that his departure extends beyond live-action appearances to include any voice work in animated adaptations or video games.

While fans had been aware of Campbell stepping back from portraying Ash in live-action productions, his declaration now puts an end to any prospect of his involvement with the character in any format. The decision marks the close of an era for the cult horror series, which has spanned over 40 years with Campbell at its center.

Prioritizing personal projects over franchise commitments

When discussing the reasons behind his decision, Campbell emphasized the importance of focusing on his own creative endeavors. He described the choice as a clear-cut one: spending time abroad working on someone else’s film versus remaining in his hometown to pursue his own projects. “It really boils down to that,” he explained, “spending time in another country working on somebody else’s movie, or spending time in your hometown working on your own movie? It wasn’t a hard choice.”

Campbell further revealed that the ‘Evil Dead’ films became optional for him, and given that flexibility, he chose to opt out entirely. “I just said, ‘I’m making a movie. I got to go make this movie, and I got to make this movie for as many years as it takes,’” he shared, highlighting his commitment to his personal filmmaking ventures and upcoming projects, including a tour following his work with Alamo Drafthouse.

This announcement, while bittersweet for many fans, signals a new chapter for Campbell as he shifts his attention from the legendary horror character that defined much of his career toward other professional opportunities.
