On Sunday in Düsseldorf, Germany, the Canadian women’s flag football team ended a 12-year gold medal drought by defeating the United States 27-20 at the 2026 IFAF Flag Football World Championships. This victory prevented Team USA from defending its world title, marking a significant shift in the sport’s competitive landscape.

The United States started the match strong, quickly taking the lead, but their advantage was short-lived. Just before halftime, Caroline Moquin-Joubert caught a pass from Sara Parker to even the score at 14-14, setting the stage for a tightly contested second half.

Shortly after the break, Parker connected with Frederique Morneau, a play that helped Canada seize control of the game. Despite a final attempt by the US on fourth down, mere yards from the goal line with only three seconds remaining, the American team was unable to convert, sealing their fate as silver medalists.

Canada and Mexico Secure Spots for 2028 Olympics

Although the United States had already guaranteed its place in the women’s flag football competition at the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics by virtue of being the host nation, Canada’s championship win secured their qualification as well. Meanwhile, the world’s number one ranked team, Mexico, clinched the bronze medal by overcoming a 13-point halftime deficit to narrowly defeat Great Britain 20-19 in the third-place game.

With Canada, Mexico, and the United States confirmed for the Olympic tournament, three additional international slots remain open. These final berths will be determined at the Olympic Q-Series events scheduled for 2028 in Montréal and Orlando, just prior to the LA Games.
