The path toward the 2026/27 UEFA Champions League group stage began to take shape following Tuesday’s third qualifying round draw, which set the stage for key matchups involving top European clubs. Chelsea will face Spanish outfit Real Sociedad, marking a significant clash as both sides aim to secure their place in the highly coveted League Phase.
Meanwhile, reigning champions Real Madrid have been paired against Dutch giants Ajax, while Paris Saint-Germain will meet Bundesliga competitor Eintracht Frankfurt. Another notable fixture includes two-time Champions League winner Wolfsburg drawn against Italy’s Serie A runners-up Inter Milan.
Progression and Financial Stakes
The victorious teams from these encounters will join an 18-team League Phase, featuring automatic qualifiers such as Barcelona, Lyon, Arsenal, and Manchester City. Clubs that fall short in this qualifying round will enter the draw for the Europa Cup, offering a secondary route to European competition.
Beyond prestige, the Champions League offers substantial financial rewards. Each team advancing to the League Phase is guaranteed a base payment of €505,000. Additional earnings include €60,000 for every match won, €20,000 for draws, and a further range of €10,000 to €180,000 contingent on final tournament placement.
The third qualifying round of the Champions League is scheduled to commence on August 26th, with coverage available on Paramount+.
