China’s ambitious South-to-North Water Diversion Project, launched in 2002, has transformed water distribution across the country, supplying approximately 185 million people in northern regions long plagued by chronic drought and water scarcity.

Nearly half of China’s population resides in the north, where limited water resources have historically hindered economic progress and everyday life. Recognizing the severity of the issue, the government embarked on an unprecedented engineering endeavor to transfer vast quantities of water from the water-rich south to the arid north.

A monumental engineering feat spanning thousands of miles

The project’s roots trace back to a vision first proposed by Mao Zedong in 1952, though technological and financial constraints at the time prevented its realization. Decades later, advancements in engineering and investment enabled the creation of a massive network of canals, reservoirs, and tunnels capable of redirecting billions of cubic meters of water annually.

This extensive network is organized into three main routes. The central route originates from the Danjiangkou Reservoir and extends more than 745 miles north, delivering water directly to the capital city, Beijing. The eastern route utilizes parts of the historic Grand Canal to supply water to major urban centers such as Tianjin. Meanwhile, the western route remains under study due to the formidable challenges posed by mountainous terrain, with plans for completion projected in the near future.

To make way for this megaproject, the government displaced around 330,000 people in 2002, a move reflecting the immense scale and impact of the undertaking. Two decades on, the water diversion system continues to reshape the lives of millions, addressing water shortages and supporting regional development across northern China.
