Belinda Bencic has officially withdrawn from her quarterfinal match against Coco Gauff at the 2026 Canadian Open, citing a persistent hip injury. This announcement came on Tuesday night, dashing what had been one of the most eagerly awaited encounters of the WTA Toronto tournament.

Gauff, therefore, progresses directly to the semifinals by walkover, advancing without contest as Bencic’s injury rendered her unable to compete.

Injury Forces Bencic to Step Away from Quarterfinal Clash

Despite the injury, Bencic chose to appear on Centre Court to address the crowd personally. She described the extensive efforts she made to prepare for the match, including a thorough warmup, application of supportive tape, and taking painkillers in hopes of easing the discomfort in her hip. Unfortunately, none of these measures were sufficient to loosen the joint enough to allow her to play.

“It was really not possible tonight,” Bencic explained during an interview following her withdrawal, acknowledging the severity of her condition.

Expressing her regret, Bencic said, “I’m really, really sorry. I’m well aware that all of you came out tonight to support us and I’m really sorry we cannot give you the match. I really tried all I could to be ready for tonight.”

Regarding the decision to withdraw, she admitted it was clear-cut given her inability to move properly. “I couldn’t really move so I don’t think I had much of a choice,” she concluded, emphasizing the necessity of prioritizing her health over competition.
