The National Women’s Soccer League is poised to welcome its 18th team with the announcement that Lucy Rushton has been appointed as the inaugural general manager for the upcoming Columbus expansion club. Set to debut in 2028, Columbus is already laying the groundwork for a competitive future under Rushton’s experienced leadership.
Rushton, whose career spans two decades in both men’s and women’s soccer, previously served as general manager for Bay FC during their inaugural 2024 season. Following her tenure there, she lent her expertise as a consultant for Portland and Gotham FC in 2025, sharpening her skills in team development and organizational strategy.
Building a Foundation for Success
In her new role, Rushton will take charge of all sporting operations in Columbus. This comprehensive responsibility includes shaping the roster strategy, managing scouting and recruitment efforts, and overseeing player performance. Additionally, she will be instrumental in developing the support staff necessary to sustain the club’s growth and competitiveness in the league.
HSG Managing Partner Whitney Haslam Johnson expressed strong confidence in Rushton’s appointment, highlighting her unique qualifications. “It is rare to find a leader of Lucy’s caliber and deep experience, with the unique understanding of how to build an expansion roster, a new organization, and a culture that our players and fans will be proud of,” Johnson said.
The Columbus franchise secured its place in the NWSL following the league’s acceptance of HSG’s record-breaking $205 million bid in April, signaling a significant investment and commitment to the future of women’s professional soccer in the region.
