Roberto De Zerbi has emphasized that Tottenham Hotspur’s recent heavy investment in new players was a crucial move to avoid the peril of relegation once again. Having narrowly escaped demotion to the Championship last season, Spurs’ manager highlighted the urgency behind the club’s transfer activity.

De Zerbi took charge late in the previous campaign and played a pivotal role in guiding Tottenham to safety on the very last day of the season, preventing what would have been the club’s first drop from the top flight since the 1970s. Since securing Premier League survival, Tottenham have committed themselves to a significant spending spree exceeding £200 million.

The club’s activity in the transfer market shows no signs of slowing down. On Friday, Tottenham confirmed a deal with Manchester City to sign Brazilian winger Savinho for an initial £75 million. This addition pushes the club’s summer expenditure beyond £300 million. Other high-profile signings include Sandro Tonali at £100 million and Mateus Fernandes for £85 million.

Adapting to Premier League Realities

Speaking ahead of Tottenham’s Premier League opener against Brentford, De Zerbi acknowledged the evolving nature of the league and the financial demands required to compete effectively. “The Premier League is a different league. It’s a different price, different competition in the transfer market,” he said.

He explained that the current market dynamics leave clubs with little choice but to meet these financial challenges if they are to stay competitive. “On the market, you can’t say if it’s right, fair or not. You can accept or not. And if you want to compete in the Premier League now, you have to adapt,” De Zerbi remarked.

Addressing the criticism surrounding Tottenham’s spending, the Italian coach acknowledged hearing repeated references to “Tottenham money,” but stressed his commitment to the club’s progress through football.
