Akane Shiga, a standout forward from Japan, has committed to PWHL Detroit with a two-year contract extending through the 2027/28 season. This signing marks a significant milestone for the 2026/27 expansion team, as they continue assembling a competitive roster ahead of their inaugural campaign.
Having initially made history as the first Japanese player in the Professional Women’s Hockey League when she joined in 2024, Shiga returns to the league after gaining valuable experience overseas. Her addition boosts Detroit’s roster to 16 players as the new season approaches.
PWHL Detroit Takes Shape Ahead of 2026/27 Expansion
Born in Obihiro, Japan, Shiga is no stranger to international competition. Since 2019, she has represented Japan in six IIHF Women’s World Championships, showcasing her skills on hockey’s biggest global stages. Additionally, Shiga competed in the Winter Olympics twice — first in Beijing in 2022 and again in Milan in 2026. At the Milan Games, the 25-year-old forward stood out, recording a goal and two assists over four games, leading her national team’s offensive efforts.
Beyond her international credentials, Shiga’s recent club performance has drawn considerable attention. After departing Ottawa following the PWHL’s inaugural season, she spent two years with Sweden’s Luleå HF. During the latest season, Shiga tallied an impressive 38 points across 26 regular-season games and led her team in the playoffs with seven points in six contests.
Her move to Detroit reunites Shiga with former Ottawa teammates Shiann Darkangelo and Daryl, signaling a promising core for the expansion side as they prepare for their debut season.
