DeWanna Bonner is set to join the Atlanta Dream following a contract buyout by the Phoenix Mercury. The six-time All-Star, who has been a prominent figure in the WNBA, agreed to terms with Atlanta on Tuesday, marking a significant move late in the season.

Currently holding a strong position in the league, the Dream boast a 25-13 record and have secured the No. 4 seed for the upcoming playoffs. Bonner’s arrival adds a wealth of championship experience to an already competitive squad, bringing in a two-time WNBA champion and the league’s third all-time leading scorer.

DeWanna Bonner Chases WNBA Title with Atlanta

This season, Bonner’s numbers with Phoenix had declined, as she averaged 10.6 points and 6.1 rebounds per game, a noticeable dip from her peak performances. Her new contract with Atlanta is a prorated maximum deal valued at approximately $116,000, covering the remainder of the regular season and playoffs.

Reflecting on the transition, Bonner expressed gratitude toward the Mercury for the opportunity to continue competing in what she acknowledges might be one of her final postseason appearances. At 39 years old, Bonner brings 17 seasons of professional experience across 572 career games, a veteran presence that the Dream will rely on as they pursue a deeper playoff run.

Joining a frontcourt anchored by Angel Reese, Bonner’s shooting ability and versatility on the wing are expected to create additional space and offensive options. This strategic addition aims to bolster Atlanta’s postseason prospects as they seek to capitalize on their strong regular-season performance.
