Electronic Arts has made a strategic decision to close BioWare and halt the development of the Mass Effect Universe, prioritizing the creation of Star Wars Battlefront 3. This revelation comes from journalist Jason Schreier, who recently detailed the circumstances in a Bloomberg report.

Insiders familiar with the matter indicate that EA’s leadership assessed their upcoming release calendar and determined that simultaneously advancing both the Mass Effect franchise and Star Wars Battlefront 3 was impractical. Given the enormous financial commitment required for each—amounting to hundreds of millions of dollars—EA chose to focus on the shooter, betting on its stronger commercial prospects compared to a sprawling RPG series.

Financial Pressure and Internal Challenges

This decision is further influenced by EA’s significant debt burden of 18 billion dollars, a consequence of its acquisition by a Saudi investment fund. This financial strain has evidently contributed to the dismantling of BioWare and the shelving of ambitious projects like the next Mass Effect installment.

Moreover, Schreier highlights that the studio’s closure and the franchise’s cancellation may also stem from additional complications. These include the critical reception of recent titles such as Mass Effect Andromeda, Anthem, and Dragon Age: Veilguard, alongside reported internal disputes within BioWare. These factors combined seem to have accelerated the end of an era for the once-celebrated developer and its flagship series.
