Elina Svitolina advanced to the quarterfinals of the 2026 China Open by defeating Ann Li in straight sets on Wednesday in Beijing. The sixth-seeded Ukrainian secured a 6-2, 6-3 victory over the No. 21 American in their WTA 1000 round of 16 match, wrapping up the contest in just 91 minutes.

Svitolina established control early, breaking Li’s serve to set the tone for the match. Throughout the encounter, she maintained the upper hand, keeping Li off balance and capitalizing on opportunities with precision. The second set mirrored the first, as Svitolina continued to convert chances efficiently, while Li struggled to establish a consistent rhythm on the court.

Svitolina Reaches Record 29th WTA 1000 Quarterfinal

This victory marked a significant milestone for Svitolina, who reached her 29th career quarterfinal at the WTA 1000 level, extending her own record. The result also strengthens her bid to qualify for the WTA Finals later in the season.

Despite the loss, Li’s performance in Beijing remains noteworthy. Prior to the tournament, she had won seven of her last ten matches, including notable wins against Belinda Bencic and Ashlyn Krueger in earlier rounds of the China Open.

Looking ahead, Svitolina is set to face home favorite Qinwen Zheng in the quarterfinals on Friday. Although the two have never met on the professional tour, both players arrive in strong form. Zheng has battled through several three-set matches against top opponents in Beijing and at the recent US Open, while Svitolina has demonstrated resilience in her own recent contests.
