ESPN has significantly broadened its coverage of the Little League Softball World Series this year, broadcasting every game on linear television. This marks a historic milestone for the event, underscoring the growing interest in youth softball nationwide.
During July, the network aired 81 regional tournament games held across seven different locations. The momentum carried into August, when the Little League Softball World Series commenced on August 2nd in Greenville, North Carolina. ESPN, ESPN2, and ABC collectively showcased all 22 World Series games, contributing to an unprecedented total of 36 games broadcasted from regionals through the championship stage, the highest number in the tournament’s history.
Such an extensive slate reflects the expanding viewership of the event. Last year’s championship game attracted an average audience of 1.44 million viewers, with a peak reaching 2.98 million, representing a remarkable 139% increase compared to the previous year.
Opening Weekend Highlights of the 2026 Little League Softball World Series
The current tournament features twelve remaining teams competing in a double-elimination format. This includes eight squads from the United States, among them the host team from North Carolina, alongside international contenders from Japan, Italy, Puerto Rico, and Canada.
The opening weekend showcased several dominant performances. Lake Mary, Florida, overwhelmed the Northwest region with a decisive 14-0 victory, powered by three RBIs apiece from Brynn Fieser and Callie Ousley. Meanwhile, the Central team delivered a commanding 11-1 win over the West, scoring seven runs in the first inning alone. On the international front, Sangō, Japan secured a 4-1 victory against Toms River, New Jersey, led by pitcher Sara Matsuda, who played a pivotal role in Asia-Pacific’s strong start.
