That year, aristocrat and cattle rancher Andrés Bores Saavedra legally imported approximately 4,400 pounds of the red swamp crayfish (Procambarus clarkii) from Louisiana, aiming to establish a new aquaculture venture. What began as a controlled farming experiment near La Puebla del Río evolved into the most destructive and irreversible biological invasion in Spain’s history over the next fifty years. The red swamp crayfish’s introduction has reshaped the ecological and economic landscape of Andalusia in ways no one anticipated at the time.
From fish farms to a full-scale escape
The initial cultivation of these crayfish occurred within aquaculture ponds, but the species quickly proved to be far from ordinary.
