Brittney Griner etched her name in WNBA history on Monday night, becoming the league’s all-time leader in blocked shots during the Connecticut Sun’s commanding 92-63 victory over the Chicago Sky.
The veteran center, in her 13th season, recorded four blocks in the game, initially matching the previous record held by Margo Dydek in the first half. Griner then surpassed Dydek’s mark with her 878th career block midway through the third quarter, establishing a new WNBA record.
Dydek, a former Sun player, had set the benchmark at 877 blocks back in 2008. Alongside her defensive milestone, Griner contributed 14 points and eight rebounds, though the historic block total was undoubtedly the highlight of her performance.
“It’s something that I’ve always went after, the one record that I really cared about,” Griner remarked following the game.
Aneesah Morrow Returns as Connecticut Shows Strength
Beyond Griner’s standout achievement, the Connecticut Sun delivered their most dominant performance of the season to secure the win over the Sky. The Sun’s defense stifled Chicago, limiting them to just 21.6% shooting in the first half. Connecticut then extended their lead with a decisive 10-0 run to close the third quarter.
Key contributors included Olivia Nelson-Ododa, who posted 11 points and a season-high 15 rebounds, while Charlisse Leger-Walker added 13 points, seven rebounds, and five assists. Off the bench, Aneesah Morrow made a cautious return after missing two games due to a left leg strain, playing nine minutes in Monday’s contest.
This victory ended a six-game losing streak for Griner and the Sun, improving their record to 3-15 on the season. Meanwhile, Chicago’s struggles continued as the Sky dropped to 4-12, sliding further down the WNBA standings.
