Colombia secured their spot in the World Cup knockout stage following a tightly contested 1-0 victory against DR Congo in Guadalajara. The decisive goal came in the 76th minute when Daniel Munoz found the net, ensuring une seconde consecutive win for coach Nestor Lorenzo‘s squad and propelling Colombia to the summit of Group K with six points—two points clear of Portugal with one game left to play.

Earlier in the tournament, Portugal had drawn 1-1 against DR Congo in their opening match before delivering an emphatic 5-0 win over Uzbekistan in Houston, highlighted by two goals from Cristiano Ronaldo. Despite Portugal’s strong showing, Colombia’s consistent performances have put them in a commanding position within the group.

From the outset at Estadio Akron, the Colombian side, buoyed by a vibrant crowd clad in yellow, demonstrated attacking intent. Munoz missed an early opportunity and also had a goal disallowed for offside, while James Rodriguez tested DR Congo’s goalkeeper Lionel Mpasi with a powerful shot that was expertly saved. Mpasi’s impressive goalkeeping thwarted several attempts from Colombia’s Johan Mojica and Luis Diaz throughout the first half, keeping the scoreline level despite sustained pressure.

Persistent Pressure and Defensive Resilience

After absorbing Colombia’s early dominance, DR Congo began to assert themselves, threatening on counter-attacks as the match progressed. Mpasi continued to be a crucial figure for the Congolese side, particularly soon after halftime when he blocked a close-range effort from Diaz, maintaining the goalless status.

The deadlock was finally broken with 14 minutes remaining when Munoz redeemed his earlier missed chances. His shot, aided by a deflection, deceived Mpasi and found the back of the net, delivering the winning goal that sealed Colombia’s advancement to the knockout rounds.
