England will begin their journey toward qualification for the 2027 Women’s World Cup by facing Greece in the first round of the European playoffs. The decisive two-legged matches are scheduled for octobre, with the aggregate winner advancing to the next stage.
England’s Path to the 2027 Women’s World Cup in Brazil
Guided by head coach Sarina Wiegman, the Lionesses must navigate two rounds of home-and-away fixtures to secure a spot at the tournament in Brazil next year. Should they overcome Greece, their potential opponent in the second playoff round will be either Slovakia or Ukraine. Notably, England previously recorded a 3-0 win over Ukraine during the initial phase of UEFA’s qualifying campaign.
Despite their strong performances, England found themselves in the playoffs after finishing behind Spain, who claimed the automatic qualification spot from Group A1.
The first playoff round is set to take place during the week of octobre 7th, with the second round scheduled for late Novembre through early Décembre, determining the final European representatives for the World Cup.
Other playoff fixtures include Scotland meeting the Czech Republic in the opening round, with the possibility of facing Sweden—who have reached the semifinals in three of the last four Women’s World Cups—in the subsequent round. Wales will take on Albania, a team they defeated 4-0 during qualifying. Northern Ireland is set to face Portugal, while the Republic of Ireland travels to Kazakhstan for their playoff tie.
Reflecting on the draw, Sarina Wiegman commented, “We’re pleased with the draw against Greece, but the focus now is on making sure we’re really well prepared.”
