Erling Haaland marked his first World Cup goals by leading Norway to a commanding 4-1 victory over Iraq, securing their first win at a major tournament in 26 years. The match took place in Boston, where Haaland opened the scoring in the 29th minute with a close-range finish, putting Norway ahead.

However, Iraq responded through a header by Aymen Hussein, leveling the score before Norway regained control. Capitalizing on a defensive mistake, Haaland netted his second goal before halftime, extending his international tally to an impressive 57 goals in just 51 appearances.

Norway Takes Command of Group I

Shortly after entering the field, Leo Ostigard headed in a third goal for Norway, effectively sealing the outcome. The visitors’ lead was further extended deep into stoppage time when Hussein accidentally scored an own goal, completing the 4-1 scoreline.

This victory places Norway at the top of Group I on goal difference, level on points with France, who earlier defeated Senegal 3-1. Norway will next face the French side in New Jersey on June 22, setting up a highly anticipated clash.

For Iraq, the journey to the World Cup has been arduous, having qualified as the 48th and final team after a grueling 21-match qualification campaign over 867 days. Hussein, who scored the decisive goal in the playoff win against Bolivia, encountered additional challenges upon arrival, being held and questioned by U.S. immigration officials for hours before the match.

Norway, meanwhile, last featured at the World Cup in 1998, a tournament remembered for their famous group stage victory over Brazil. The current squad, coached by Stale Solbakken, has now taken a significant step forward in their quest for World Cup success.
