Iga Świątek overcame a challenging start against Taylor Townsend to secure a 6-1, 2-6, 6-3 victory in her opening match at the 2026 Wimbledon Championships. On Centre Court, the No. 3 seed endured Plus than two hours of intense competition to fend off the spirited American and advance in her title defense.
Swiatek Dominates Early, Townsend Strikes Back
Świątek quickly took control in the first set, stringing together six consecutive games after the opening exchange through precise baseline play. However, Townsend, a three-time Grand Slam doubles champion, mounted a strong response by disrupting Świątek’s rhythm at the net during the second set. With aggressive net play and consistent approach shots, Townsend pushed the match to a deciding third set, sealing the second set with an ace on her third set point.
The final set’s momentum swung dramatically in its opening game, which extended to 21 minutes. Despite committing three double faults and facing nine deuces, Świątek held serve, saving four break points in the process. Reflecting afterwards, Świątek acknowledged the pressure of that game, stating, “Sometimes just serving the ball in might be a tough ask. This game for sure was about that, and about believing that I can do it.”
After holding serve, Świątek broke Townsend to take a 4-2 lead but immediately lost the break back. The turning moment came when Świątek executed the match’s most impressive rally: an angled drop shot followed by a precise passing shot into an open court, allowing her to break again and close out the match with an untroubled service game.
Świątek’s next opponent will be Karolina Pliskova, who was the Wimbledon finalist in 2021.
