Ipswich Town FC has appointed Gary O’Neil as their new manager, following the unexpected resignation of Kieran McKenna after the club’s promotion to the Premier League. The announcement was made on Mardi, marking a new chapter for the Suffolk-based team as they prepare for top-flight competition.

O’Neil, aged 43, arrives at Portman Road on a three-year deal after leaving his post at French outfit Strasbourg. During his tenure in Ligue 1, he led Strasbourg to an historic UEFA Conference League semi-final appearance—the first time the club had advanced to the last four in any European tournament—and secured an impressive eighth-place finish in the domestic league.

Experienced Leadership for Premier League Challenge

Before his stint in France, O’Neil built a reputation in Anglais football managing Premier League sides Bournemouth and Wolves. At both clubs, he successfully maintained their top-flight status in his debut seasons, showcasing his ability to stabilize teams under pressure. This experience will be crucial as Ipswich aim to avoid relegation after clinching promotion from the Championship on the final day of the season, edging out Millwall to secure second place.

McKenna, who had overseen Ipswich’s progress over five years, including the promotion campaign, stepped down on June 10 following the club’s failure to stay in the Premier League during the 2024-25 season. His departure came as a surprise to many, leaving O’Neil with the task of building on the foundation laid by his predecessor.

Upon his appointment, O’Neil expressed enthusiasm for his new role, acknowledging the club’s ambition and the significance of Ipswich Town to its supporters and local community. “I have followed the progress the club has made over the last few years closely and to now have the opportunity to lead Ipswich Town in the Premier League is something I am hugely excited by,” he stated.

He also recognized the challenges ahead as Ipswich prepare for their Premier League campaign, emphasizing the responsibility that comes with managing a club so deeply rooted in its region. Survival in the top tier will be the immediate focus for O’Neil and his squad as they seek to establish themselves among England’s elite once again.
