The future of Xbox’s first-party studios is facing significant uncertainty, with recent developments suggesting a potentially grim outcome. Following a highly praised Xbox Games Showcase, Asha Sharma has initiated a sweeping restructuring effort within the Xbox division that threatens several of its in-house development teams.
Among the studios caught in this turmoil is Obsidian Entertainment, renowned for hits such as Fallout: New Vegas and Avowed. According to Game File, Obsidian, together with Compulsion Games, Ninja Theory, Undead Labs, and Double Fine, is currently engaged in negotiations with Xbox leadership in an effort to avoid complete shutdowns.
Sales Shortfalls Trigger Reevaluation
This situation aligns with earlier reports from the year indicating that recent releases, specifically Avowed and The Outer Worlds 2, fell short of sales expectations. In février, Obsidian’s CEO, Fergus Urquhart, acknowledged that these disappointing results had prompted the company to reassess their approach to game development, including the scale of investment and length of production cycles. While he dismissed the prospect of a direct sequel, The Outer Worlds 3, Urquhart did confirm ongoing interest in expanding the Avowed universe with new projects.
Despite these intentions, the current climate suggests a far less stable outlook. Should the negotiations fail or conclude unfavorably, Obsidian Entertainment could face acquisition by another entity or, in a worst-case scenario, permanent closure. Such an outcome would mark the loss of a studio responsible for a portfolio of critically acclaimed titles including Fallout: New Vegas, Grounded, Pentiment, Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic, The Outer Worlds, Avowed, and Pillars of Eternity.
