The Phoenix Mercury have waived Marta Suárez, the 6-foot-3 Espagnol forward, concluding her brief tenure with the team after 10 games during the WNBA’s 30th anniversary season. Suárez’s release marks the second time this year she has been cut from a WNBA roster.
From Draft Day to Hardship Contracts: Suárez’s Journey
Suárez’s path to Phoenix was far from straightforward. Originally picked 16th overall in the 2026 WNBA Draft by Seattle, her rights were immediately traded to the Golden State Valkyries. After appearing in just one preseason game for Golden State, Suárez was waived. Although the Valkyries extended a developmental contract offer, she declined it in favor of joining the Mercury on a developmental contract signed on May 6th.
As injuries impacted the Mercury’s roster, Suárez was elevated to a seven-day hardship contract on July 9th, providing her with an opportunity to contribute Plus significantly. Despite limited playing time, she showed promise during her stint with Phoenix.
During her 9.7 minutes per game on the court, Suárez averaged 3.9 points and 1.3 rebounds, shooting an efficient 50% from the field and 40% from beyond the arc. Her standout performance came on July 9th against the Indiana Fever, where she scored a career-high 10 points.
Nevertheless, the Mercury decided to waive Suárez once again, sending the young forward back to the waiver wire. Her shooting ability and floor spacing remain notable strengths as she looks toward the next chapter of her professional career.
