Ronald Koeman has officially resigned as head coach of the Netherlands national football team following their unexpected elimination from the World Cup in the Round of 32 by Morocco. The announcement came less than une journée after the Dutch side was knocked out on penalties after a gripping 1-1 draw in Monterrey.

In a statement shared on Instagram, Koeman expressed his deep disappointment, writing, “Last night I took the decision to end my stint as head coach of the Dutch National Team. We all shared the dream of making history at this World Cup, but we fell short. No one is Plus disappointed by that than I am. As head coach, the responsibility ultimately rests with me.”

The Netherlands entered the tournament as one of Europe’s top contenders, with expectations high for a strong run into the later stages. However, their campaign ended in heartbreak after conceding a stoppage-time equalizer. Cody Gakpo had given the Dutch hope with a goal that seemed to secure their progression, but Issa Diop’s late strike sent the game into extra time.

Penalty Shootout Ends Dutch Hopes

Neither team managed to break the deadlock during extra time, leading to a tense penalty shootout. Morocco ultimately triumphed 3-2, securing a historic berth in the Round of 16 and abruptly concluding Koeman’s second tenure as the national team coach.

At 63 years old, Koeman departs after overseeing another disappointing World Cup showing for the Netherlands, who failed to meet the high expectations placed upon them before the tournament began.
