Australian forward Sam Kerr is on the verge of returning to the National Women’s Soccer League, set to join reigning champions Gotham FC following the expiration of her contract with Chelsea. The 32-year-old striker, who recently concluded a remarkable tenure in England, will reportedly sign with Gotham FC on a free transfer.
Kerr’s departure from Chelsea, announced in May, marked the end of a six-and-a-half-year spell during which she secured five Women’s Super League titles and three FA Cups. Her impact at Stamford Bridge was monumental, scoring 116 goals in 158 appearances — a tally that ties her as the club’s all-time leading scorer.
Prior to her success in England, Kerr had already established a significant presence in the NWSL. After making her American debut in 2013 with Western New York Flash (now NC Courage), she joined Sky Blue FC—Gotham’s predecessor—in 2015. Her career in the league advanced further when she became the top regular-season scorer with the Chicago Red Stars before embarking on her London journey in 2019.
Strategic Moves Ahead of Kerr’s Return
In anticipation of Kerr’s arrival, Gotham FC bolstered their roster by trading the reigning Rookie of the Year, Lilly Reale, to the 2026 expansion team Boston, acquiring $350,000 in allocation money. This maneuver highlights the club’s commitment to strengthening their squad as they defend their NWSL title.
Notably, Kerr’s return to Gotham reunites her with several former Chelsea teammates, including Jess Carter, Ann-Katrin Berger, and Guro Reiten, fostering a familiar and potentially formidable attacking unit. Additionally, the move brings Kerr’s wife, former USWNT and Gotham standout Kristie Mewis, back to the United States.
Currently positioned fifth in the league standings, Gotham FC is simultaneously planning for the long term by announcing the development of a new $35 million training facility. This investment underscores the club’s ambition to maintain its status as a leading force in women’s soccer as they welcome Kerr back to the league.
