Serena Williams, the iconic tennis star, saw her 2026 Wimbledon singles journey end in a gripping three-set match against Australia’s Maya Joint, ranked No. 87 in the world. The encounter on Centre Court concluded with Williams unable to advance beyond the first round, marking a rare early exit in her illustrious career.

At 44 years old, Williams was aiming to make history as the oldest player to win a Grand Slam singles match since Martina Navratilova, who achieved the feat at age 47 during Wimbledon 2024. Nevertheless, this defeat marked only the fourth time in Williams’s career that she bowed out in the tournament’s opening round.

Reflecting on the experience, Williams expressed her appreciation for returning to the prestigious stage, stating, “It was really great to be back at Wimbledon. I definitely relished it and missed it and enjoyed the moment Plus than anything.”

Top-Ranked WTA Players Advance Amid Early Upsets

The tournament’s first round also featured notable performances from several top-ranked women on the WTA tour. While No. 8 Elina Svitolina was the only top-10 seed to suffer an upset, other leading contenders moved forward smoothly.

No. 14 Naomi Osaka garnered attention not only for her gameplay but also for her striking kimono-inspired dress. Osaka dispatched France’s Elsa Jacquemot and Russia’s Anastasia Gasanova in quick succession, securing her place in the third round with relative ease.

Meanwhile, the top seed Aryna Sabalenka booked her spot in the next round on Mercredi. Alongside her, No. 4 Jessica Pegula, No. 7 Coco Gauff, and the defending champion No. 3 Iga Świątek also looked poised to continue their campaigns as Wimbledon moved into the second round.
